Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the Integration of Princely States
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a key role in uniting India after independence. At that time, there were about 562 princely states that were not directly governed by the British but by local kings. Patel used a mix of diplomacy, political pressure, and administrative skills to bring these states into India.
- Diplomacy: He negotiated with the rulers to sign the Instrument of Accession, which allowed them to join India.
- Pressure: He used political pressure when needed, as seen in the case of Junagadh, which initially wanted to join Pakistan.
- Administration: Patel organized and merged smaller states to streamline governance.
Thanks to Patel's efforts, India became a unified nation.
